What is IPL?
IPL stands for “intense pulsed light therapy,” and is an entirely non-invasive, non-ablative treatment for pigmented lesions, freckles, age marks, wrinkles, fine lines, acne, and stretch marks. Through high-intensity pulses of light, IPL can be used to improve the appearance of this broad range of skin conditions by stimulating healing and renewal within every layer of the skin.
How Does it Work?
IPL works in much the same way that other laser treatments do. During an IPL procedure, a series of different wavelengths of light are passed over the treatment area in a series of pulses. The energy of this light is absorbed by different structures of the skin depending on the specific wavelength of that light. Because IPL emits a broad range of different colors of light, it is able to target a broad range of skin structures and problems.
Once this light has been absorbed by the skin, it triggers the body’s natural healing process. This causes the cells in both the upper and lower layers of the skin to become reinforced as newer, stronger tissues are created. In addition to triggering the healing process, this light can eliminate some of the structures of the skin responsible for excessive redness, acne, or pigmentation.
What is the Treatment Process Like?
Each IPL treatment session typically takes no longer than 20 minutes and is generally well-tolerated by patients. While this treatment is not particularly comfortable, most patients liken the sensation to the feeling of a rubber band snapping against the skin. This treatment is administered by our practice’s licensed Master Aesthetician, Deanna Bain, who has 14 years of experience in the field of aesthetics.
Following treatment, patients can immediately return to their daily activities. While most people experience little to no significant downtime after treatment, side effects like redness, hair loss, and a mild sunburn-like sensation in the treatment area are common. Even though patients begin to see results after their first treatment, between four and six sessions are needed to get significant, lasting improvements.
